GXCC: Update on the terrace and bar service

07 May 2021

Dear members,

The cricket season is now under way with league games set to begin this weekend, weather permitting.

We’ve also had unprecedented numbers of youngsters enjoying our new coaching regime from head coach, Chris Marrow who has just sent out a message updating us on the great start that’s been made to the season on the coaching front.

I just wanted to provide all members with an update on the situation regarding the rebuilding of the terrace and the opening of the bar facilities.

Unfortunately, despite best efforts, we haven’t been able to get things up and running by the end of April as I had originally suggested to you. I want to send my apologies to all. I know it is frustrating, especially on top of the Covid restrictions which are restricting everybody already.

Here is the current situation. We are planning to have the bar open from Friday May 21st, opening from then on Thursday and Friday evenings and from mid-afternoon on Saturday and Sunday evenings. For now, until June 21st when government restrictions are relaxed, all bar service and payment will be at tables only. After June 21st, we hope that things will get back to something like normal although it is possible that some social distancing restrictions may still need to be in place.

We are hopeful that the terrace rebuilding work has been completed by May 21st, with tiles laid and railings put up, so that bar service can take place on our lovely new terrace. If it turns out that the terrace is not open by that date, for example because bad weather in the next two weeks throws off the schedule, the bar will still be open but only for service indoors and on the side-balcony.

I know many of you have been asking why we can’t open the bar already as some other clubs and pubs have been doing. We understand the desire to do this, but after carefully looking into it, it has been decided that with unfinished building work, it would simply not be safe. After all we don’t want to have our license taken away just as we build a new terrace!

One final point on the bar. As you know, we are moving to a volunteer-run model this year so now that we are opening up, we will be looking for volunteers to fill specific slots as the season progresses. Many of you have been kind enough to offer your help in principle, and be assured, you will receive adequate instruction on how to operate the bar and the electronic tills. So if you do want to offer to help, please drop me an email (peter.westaway@btopenworld.com), or Justin Hampshire (Justin.hampshire@molsoncoors.com).

OK, that’s all for now. I am off to the club to marshall the traffic for our coaching sessions. I’m sure those of you that have been coming to the club on Friday evenings will have noticed how busy it is, so if at all possible, please try to walk or ride down to the club, or park away from the ground and walk the last hundred yards if possible. You’ll help save the planet and prevent our neighbours getting annoyed, a double bonus!

All the best, and looking forward to seeing you down the club in the weeks ahead.
