Newsletter from Gerrards Cross Sports Club Chairman

March 2019

With the new season for Cricket and Tennis fast approaching we (the Sports Club Management Committee) thought it a good idea to give members and parents an update on what is happening at the Club.

The Club is a not for profit organisation that exists to promote sport in the local community. It is run by members, dozens of whom volunteer to do all the jobs that are needed to make it successful. I would like to give them a big thank you for this, as without them we would not have a Club at all.

Here are some of the things that we are moving forward on:

Clubhouse:

  • The members’ area has been refurbished. It has been opened up, new flooring has been installed, new furniture purchased and it has been redecorated. We are working on new lighting and a new bar front to complete this project.

  • We now have full Sky TV, and plan to install an additional large TV.

  • We plan to install a large digital picture frame so that team photos, notices etc. can be viewed.

New Terrace

The terrace facing the sports field and the refurbishment of the toilets are our next project. We have an architect preparing drawings of what the new terrace could look like and these will be on display for members feedback shortly.

Social membership

Our clubhouse is a fantastic facility. To keep it viable we need to make full use of it. To encourage this, we are focusing upon increasing social membership as well as refurbishment. This is for individuals who do not participate in the sports that we provide. We will limit the number in this category as we do not want to be overwhelmed.

  • Social membership is set at £30 this year.

  • All members get a 10% discount on drinks at the bar

  • All members get a heavily discounted clubhouse hire fee for private functions

  • Provision of full Sky TV

  • Invitation to join social events of both the Club and the sports sections

  • Spectating the playing of top-class sport (that must be the bit when I am not playing)

  • Provision of bar food and regular BBQs in the summer

Parents of junior members, who are not members themselves, are invited to join as social members. There is no obligation here and parents/carers who are at the club supporting the juniors have an open invitation to the clubhouse and its facilities.

We would ask existing members to encourage friends, family and neighbours to come along and enjoy our excellent facilities so that they can consider becoming social members.

New Sports section

Since Hockey have moved to play on artificial surfaces the playing field has been redundant for 7 months each year. This presents an opportunity to increase sporting activity, so we have agreed in principle to establish a new junior football section, subject to members approval at the AGM. Plans to get this underway are in place. This is quite an undertaking and if anyone is able to assist with this, please let me know. There will be more news on this to follow.

Donations

We have recently received a number of donations / pledges and I would like to sincerely thank those individuals as they make progress on the above possible. Personal donations to the club qualify for gift aid, so any qualifying donation is enhanced by 25%.

I hope that you find this newsletter informative. Any feedback is always welcome. If you catch me in the clubhouse and buy me a drink, I promise to be all ears!

Please enjoy your club in the year ahead.
